Compagnie FLAK (CAN): Portable Dances

2000 Ft

“Poetry without artifice. (…) Dancers have, in the space, the strength of a diamond on a sheet of glass. They cut space with an apparent ease that reveals their high level of technique and undeniable mastery of the body.” (Normand Marcy, Voir, Montréal, 2005)

Portable Dances is a triple bill, working with the simplicity of movement and light. The first part, Pas de Deux for four Dancers consists of a duet, a section deploying \mechanisms in motion\, that is, structures of movement that function like the inside of a watch. The mechanisms in motion are blocks of movement that begin with a simple phrase and develop many versions of the same phrase, inverting it, altering it, elaborating it, deconstructing it. We see the creation of complex machines of legs and arms that touch the soul with the beauty and simplicity of movement. The next part, Solo with Light is a solo performed by José Navas. The only object on stage is a source of light. The last section, Trio in White is a trio for female dancers, an intricate movement structure that alternates between meditation and high-speed dancing, with sharp changes and movement deconstruction.

A few words from the choreographer \My fascination with movement remains strong and constant. In Adela, mi amor, I studied the connections between the drama of Federico Garcia Lorca’s poetry and the power of movement and female performers. It is after this experience that the creation of Portable Dances emerges as my artistic imperative. I want to venture into the complex design of movement, the abstraction of movement and the fascination of movement in and across the space. In Portable Dances I am challenging myself to combine high emotion with the strict formalism of the chosen structures, as in the finest poetry. The ideas behind Portable Dances are intimately linked to the work of visual artist Robert Rauschenberg, his collages and theories on space. I will investigate the many possibilities of design in space and design of movement.\

José Navas Venezuelan-born artist José Navas has been building his own rich choreographic repertoire since 1991. Now containing over twenty works, this repertoire rapidly propelled the choreographer to some of the world's most prestigious venues for contemporary dance: the Holland Dance Festival, Vienna's Im Puls Festival, London's Dance Umbrella, Joyce Theater in New York, London's Dance Umbrella, Venice Biennale and Aoyama Theatre, in Tokyo.

Bold, emotional, and unusual, Navas's choreographic universe draws upon his heritage and his love for Latin American literature. Navas creates fantastic atmospheres where the audience's only compass is their own emotion.
