Opening night of the 14th Verzio International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival
Held annually since 2004, Verzio is the only human rights documentary film festival in Hungary. The festival presents high-quality, creative documentaries, aiming to promote open society, democratic values, rule-of-law, freedom of expression, political and cultural pluralism, as well as to expose abuse and human rights violations throughout the world.

Opening film: Nowhere to Hide, directed by Zaradasht Ahmed / 2016 / 85 min / Arabic / English and Hungarian subtitles

A first-person story of working in a hospital for five years in the central Iraq war zone.
The film follows nurse Nori Sharif through five years of dramatic change in Iraq. Seen through the eyes of the main protagonist, the film offers a unique, immersive account of one of the world’s most dangerous and inaccessible areas — the “triangle of death” in central Iraq. The film moves from stories of hopeful survivors to Nori himself as the conflicts that continue following the departure of US troop force the remaining population (including most of the hospital staff) to flee. Nori remains until ISIS advances and takes over Jalawla in 2014, and only then turns the camera on himself as he and his family quickly seek safety.

Following the screening Verzio festival director Oksana Sarkisova will talk with the film’s director Zaradasht Ahmed.

A reception will follow.
