Talking about salaries and money among freelance artists is not always easy. Mani Me (Money Me) is a series of workshops in which we want to give freelance artists and their employers a chance to discuss their attitudes and values regarding money, and address related taboos and challenges in communication. In Hungarian.
The lack of any formal agreement on minimum fees in the freelance artistic community, the weak lobbying power of artists (as well as institutions) along with dwindling subsidies, inflation and the resulting stagnation or even decrease of salaries all contribute to creating more and more tension and frustration within the independent scene. With the Mani Me workshop series, Veronika Szabó and Júlia Vavra invite fellow artists and concerned institutions to talk about money, salaries, frameworks and demands without taboos. They want to examine the time we spend working and its monetary value. When they themselves started talking about this, they realised that so many of their colleagues struggle with similar problems every day. Therefore they set out to initiate change.
This workshop is part of the 5th edition of NEXTFEST (5-9 March 2025), Trafó's very own mini festival, with which it celebrates new forms, emerging artists and the joy of experimentation. It is realized as part of Nextfest Free School, the festival's accompanying programme. Please find the full festival programme here, most events are English-friendly!
Supported by SÍN Arts Centre and its participatory funding programme RÉS.
