In the assembly hall of Hungary’s first large-scale arms factory (opened in 1889), the artists invite us to a movement-based workshop that collectively explores how we would respond if our country starts to arm itself intensively in response to a perceived or real threat–which is exactly what is happening in Hungary and many countries across Europe.

How do we feel about the fact that, with our tacit consent and financial support, weapons are being purchased and people are being trained to kill? How can we resist this? And what would we do if we learnt that we have to face a potential attack unarmed? Is it inevitable that people die in order to ‘resolve’ a conflict that is considered unsolvable, or is it possible to fight with weapons that are not designed to kill, i.e. ‘less lethal weapons’?

Bence György Pálinkás deals with political and social issues, creating work in text-based, visual, and performative genres. He collaborates with diverse artistic partners to produce documentary theater performances, workshop-based exhibition projects, and open-ended workshops in public education. His previous performances at Trafó include Hungarian Acacia, in collaboration with Kristóf Kelemen, and Singing Youth, with Judit Böröcz and Máté Szigeti, which have been featured at prestigious international festivals and institutions such as the Wiener Festwochen, the Spielart Festival München, Hellerau Dresden, Bozar Brussels, and the Sharjah Art Foundation. He realizes educational projects in collaboration with organizations such as DIA – Foundation for Democratic Youth, the Tom Lantos Institute, and visual arts institutions, such as the OFF-Biennale Budapest, the Art Encounters Biennial in Timișoara, the tranzit.org network, and the Museum of Ethnography in Vienna.

Tímea Török is an active maker and facilitator in the field of community art and applied theater. For two years she led the Thought Generator programme at Trafó House of Contemporary Arts, was member of the ÖrkényKÖZ initiative, and founded the Parallel Creative Group, which implements independent community art projects in various collaborations with different groups and civil participants. Her productions and workshops initiate collective thinking on social issues and have been featured in programs such as MU Theater, OFF Biennale, Flaszter - Budapest’s 1st Public Space Contemporary Art Biennale, and the Budapest Autumn and Spring Festival.
