Teater NO99, one of the most progressive and renowned theatre companies in Estonia is visiting Hungary with their latest performance, Uncle Tom's Cabin. It's a show of firsts: this is the first time Estonian theatre and Teater NO99 in particular is debuting in Hungary and this is also the first time the company has taken Uncle Tom's Cabin on tour.
With its minstrel show-like blackface parody, this adaptation of the 19th century classic novel delivers a playful, yet seriously dramatic effect. With their rich visuals and improvisational style of acting, the Estonian company has everything it takes to stun audiences.
Thomas McEvilley singled out Uncle Tom’s Cabin as the only work of art that truly changed the world. The novel was published in the mid-19th century, introducing American households to the view that slavery is atrocious and that Negros have feelings too. According to popular beliefs, the views contained in the novel led to the abolishment of slavery following the Civil War.
