Evening of Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy

1200 Ft / Student: 900 Ft / season ticket is valid

Choreographies in Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy are developed through long months of intense work with all the joy and agony of the creation process. There is a lot to do; finding a proper dramaturgical path, creating a dance vocabulary, choosing the music and the cast. The traditional December evening yet again brings choreographies that carry the enthusiasm and fresh ideas of a new generation of dancers.

HAIDAU is one of the many implement-driven (staff, scythe, sword, broom) martial arts-like weapon dances (for example, the gypsy and shepherd stick dances) of the Carpathian Basin. The contemporary dance treatment of this motif originates from the school task given by Zoltán Batyu Farkas. This “student-study” spawned a successful piece and following the previous street performances, we’ve adapted it to a stage environment.

SET AND RESET - Two of the original cast members of Set and Reset, Éva Karczag and Vicky Shick, taught a group of dancers of the Budapest Dance School exact sequences from this 1983 piece, and then engaged them in the same unique protocol that Trisha Brown asked her dancers to utilize during its formation. The dancers then generated their own moves, which were shaped into Set and Reset/Reset, a variation on the original choreography that is now presented in the final performance. Here, as with her Company in 1983, the dancers are an integral part of both the creative process and the end result. The Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy’s version of Set and Reset/Reset began with a two week-long work period with Karczag and Shick. Following the introduction of the material and their working methods, the dancers continued developing the piece on their own, until they re-convened for a short period in November to make some final decisions. All 14 dancers from both casts were equally involved in the creation of the current version.
