Dancefilm Rosas danst Rosas based on Teresa de Keersmaeker (Rosas) és Thierry de Mey’s screenplay, and de Mey’s music:

Programme:
ANDREA SZIGETVÁRI (H): SWINGING DOOR
A composition for a dancer and live electronics
With the participation of:
Ladányi Andrea, Bánki Zsolt

The movements of sounds coming from the throat (talking, breathing), pre-recorded, pre-processed and processed in realtime, and of imaginary swinging door imitations are activated by the hands of a dancer, whose motions are captured by a video camera.

THIERRY DE MEY (B): LIGHT MUSIC
A composition for a "conductor/soloist", for projection equipment and interactive systems

With the participation of: Jean Geoffroy

Light Music was first performed in March 2004 at the Musiques en Scène Biennale in Lyon. The piece is an interplay with the poetic duality of movement: permanence of hands given form by light; remnants of imprints projected on the screen.

To play ’Light Music’ is to rediscover oneself, to relearn simple movements in all their power and, above all, their fragility. Hand gestures, body movements – a line or a curve can say it all. A rustle, a breath, and everything falls into place; beating of the torn heart. "Threads drawn out" into "infinities", from "chaos" to the "dancing stars" as they rise, a single possible end: "Silence must be". Like an echo of our anxieties, our doubts… /J. Geoffroy/

The piece was composed in the studios of Grame in Lyon and Gmem in Marseille, during residences by Thierry De Mey. Pushing back the frontier between movements that produce sound and the movements of dance, ’Light Music’ transfigures those of a performer confronting his audience alone. The piece makes play with the poetic duality of movement: permanence of hands given form by light; remanence of imprints – ephemeral, ethereal, sensual, sharp, percussive – projected on the screen. Movement and music correlate, collide, generate and suspend reciprocally, bearing us away towards chaos, and of course towards the silence, that must be.

Thierry De Mey (°1956) is filmmaker, composer and percussionist. He co-founded the music ensembles Maximalist! (1985-1991) and Ictus. This renowned Belgian music ensemble for contemporary music has performed several of his compositions. De Mey’s work has also been internationally performed by renowned ensembles such as Arditti string kwartet, the Hilliard ensemble, de London Symphonietta (conducted by J. Wood) en the Orchestra Symphonique de Lille (conducted by J.C. Casadesus).

You might remember Thierry de Mey’s name from last year’s Temps d’Images Festival: in the ARTE film selection we showed his dance film based on William Forsythe’s choreography entitled One flat thing reproduced.
