Yasmeen Godder: Sudden Birds

To the devoted visitors of Trafó and Budapest Autumn Festival, Yasmeen Godder’s name is bound to ring a bell: the young Israeli choreograhper is presenting her work in Budapest for the 4th time. For those who haven’t seen her work yet, Sudden Birds is a perfect introduction – a sensitive piece full of poetry and tension, as well as humor, often bordering on grotesque. A world of movement, at the same time playful and disturbing. There is no doubt, Yasmeen Godder is singularly talented in showing the complexity of layers and psychological/emotional dimensions in dance, while creating fresh and exquisitely detailed movement material..

Yasmeen Godder

Yasmeen Godder, regarded as one of the greatest talents of the young choreographers’ generation, lives and works in Israel. She studied dance in New York where she started creating and presenting work in 1997. For the past 4 years she has created the full evening length works: „Hall” (2001), „Sudden Birds” (2002), „Two Playful Pink” (2003) and „Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder” (2004). She has presented all three works in Trafó with great success in the previous years. She re-stages Sudden Birds after four years..
 

Yasmeen Godder has been awarded a NY Dance and Performance Bessie Award for the presentation of her work I feel funny today in 2001 as part of the Split Stream Series at DTW. Her work has been presented regularly at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel-Aviv and in NYC she has been commissioned by DTW, the Kitchen, Dancing in the Streets and more. Godder was a Movement Research Artist in Residence 1999-2000, she is a recipient of NYFA Fellowship in 2000, and has received the Israeli Ministry of Culture’s prestigious „Young Choreographer’s Award” for the year 2001 and 2003. Her company has received the Ministry of Culture’s award for „Small Dance Companies” for outstanding performances in 2003. Her work is rapidly gaining widespread international acknowledgment and has been presented throughout Europe and the US..
