gergő d. farkas’s latest work drifts through a place of continuous emergence; a nebulous, yet sensual world where bodies feel a little more and love a little harder. After its debut in Vienna, rascal now celebrates its Hungarian premiere!
In this somatically cultivated fantasy disguised as a dance solo, an array of beings come and go but never arrive, offering a disorienting journey between ins and outs, thens and nows, heres and elsewheres as they roam between a bodyworlding and a world bodying.
Accompanied by Márton Csernovszky’s microtonally twisted spatial sound compositions, the performer carefully (mis)guides the spectator through contorted landscapes composed by the visual artist duo Lőrinc Borsos and light designer Leo Kuraite. Moved by mysterious photosensitive skin cells, mischievous guts, and hyperstimulated vestibular systems, rascal is a porous dance (re)connecting passivity with passion.
rascal is farkas d. gergő’s third piece created through organ-ing, a choreographic research and movement practice where fiction intertwines with the body’s pre-existing narratives. Bringing forth an array of fantasies that weave together the felt sense of the body, the artist nurtures strange organs in the body: formations with vague anatomical functions and strong poetic agencies.
gergő d. farkas (they/them) is a gathering of cells with a passion for choreography, dance, romance and mischief. Being lost in Vienna, Budapest, Stockholm, or somewhere in between, they dream of belonging to sensual spaces where not only humans are invited to dance. By merging somatics with practices of world-building, they desire to find a way of experiencing the world in which fantasy is deeply intertwined with everything what is considered real.
Their choreographic work has been presented in venues and festivals such as Zürcher Theater Spektakel (CH), Spring Forward Festival (GR, IT), Imagetanz (AT), TQW’s RAKETE (AT), Trafó House of Contemporary Arts (HU), under500 Festival (HU), Dansehallerne (DK), MDT Moderna Dansteatern (SE), Réplika Teatro (SE), Open House Festival (CY), MDT Legacy Festival (NL), and Dansmakers Amsterdam (NL), amongst others. Their first work, Deep Fake has been a part of the Aerowaves Twenty22 as well as the DunaPart 2023 selections, and was nominated for the ZKB Acknowledgement Prize (CH), while their second work, babes was selected for Aerowaves Twenty25 and nominated for the Rudolf Lábán Award (HU).
Besides dance performances, gergő’s choreographic and movement practices manifest in open-level workshops. As a teacher and facilitator, they collaborated with Paso a 2 (ES), Sín Arts Centre (HU), Höjden (SE), Dance Cork, Firkin Crane (IE), and worked as one of the travelling artists of Creative Europe’s program Performing Gender / Dancing in Your Shoes. Together with Balázs Oláh and Júlia Vavra, they organise queer-inclusive Hungarian folk dance and other movement workshops under the name W*tches and F*gs.
In 2021, gergő received the DanceWeb Scholarship (AT), under the mentorship of Frederic Gies and Anne Juren. As a performer, they’ve worked with Cullberg (SE), Frederic Gies, Kata Juhász, Veza Fernandez, Ofelia Jarl Ortega, Karin Pauer, Alma Söderberg, SERAFINE1369, Viktor Szeri, Alex Franz Zehetbauer, amongst others. Between 2021 and 2022, they were a member of the Budapest-based queer collective OMOH. gergő holds a BA in Contemporary Dance from the Amsterdam University of the Arts (MTD department) and an MFA in Choreography from the Stockholm University of the Arts.
