How I Became Emese tells the story of a young woman working at a news channel who starts losing touch with reality due to an unwanted pregnancy. The reality surrounding her becomes so unbearable that she starts creating her own. She builds a nest in which she can feel safe and free – a home in an unhomely world.

What happens to a person who is reminded each day that she does not belong to the community she inhabits? And what can a vulnerable person do when something traumatic happens to her and has no one to turn to for help?
This one woman show aims to capture the spirit of what it is like to live in present-day Hungary and be a young woman of colour in search of her identity.

It is the first project of this creative team of five: Emese Kárász and Dorottya Farkas studied theatre-making at Freeszfe Society, Ella Fazekas is currently engaging in a community theatre course at the same school, Szandi Vass graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts as a theatre dramaturge, and Gábor Erményi is a student of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music studying electronic and applied composition.

Emese’s story is neither a tale, nor a dream, it is contemporary reality. A portrait of a woman, of a society.
