10 teams, thousands of rows of data, many creative ways of analysing data and presenting data visualisations. ‘Be Smart with Data’ is a hackathon organized by K-Monitor Association as part of their two-year open data programme, supported by the Norway NGO Grants initiative
.
Teaching people about segregation and integration with the help of an online game; showing the effects of state spending on commercials in the media; revealing what survey data says about how women are treated in maternity care – these are a few of the ideas that have emerged from previous Hungarian hackathons involving NGOs. The K-Monitor Hungarian anti-corruption NGO launched the ‘Be Smart with Data’ programme in 2013 in order to facilitate civil society initiatives that require data analyst or developer knowledge.

Teams of between three and five people are invited to apply for the hackathon by emailing info@k-monitor.hu, the closing date for applications being September 30, 2015. The organizers will be able to provide professional support to up to 10 teams in total. The event will be held on October 5, 10am to 6pm and October 6, 10am to 4pm, with the final presentations (which are open to everyone) taking place on October 6 at 2pm.

The ‘Be Smart with Data’ hackathon held at Trafó Klub is part of our Smart City-themed ‘Mission Possible’ city hacking expedition starting in spring 2016, organized in cooperation with the Netherlands Embassy.
