„I believe this dialogue with gravity to be an essential element of butoh”
(Ushio Amagatsu)

Founded by Ushio Amagatsu in 1975, Sankai Juku was invited to perform in Europe for the first time in 1980. Sankai Juku went to Nancy International Festival in France with the firm conviction that Butoh would be accepted. The performance was such a sensation that for the next four years, the company remained in Europe and performed in various international festivals, Since 1982 Sankai Juku has premiered a new piece approximately once every two years at Theatre de la Ville,Paris. The piece to be presented in Trafo, Utsushi (meaning copy, duplicate) is composed of excerpts of pieces from the repertory of Sankai Juku, newly reworked and restaged in order to constitute a work of its own as the quintessence of the art of the choreographer Ushio Amagatsu from the last 30 years.

As part of our 200% dance series, on 30 November and 1 December another famous Japanese choreographer, Umeda Hiroaki will present his pieces in Trafó. Those who buy tickets for the performances of Sankai Juku and Umeda Hiroaki alike will get 10% discount from both tickets!
