Big Art Group: Flicker

Director, Caden Manson describes Flicker as \a comedy that is vulgar and venomous, vital and voracious,\ adding that he hopes his \satirical attacks counter the sanitized commercialism of today's theater by asserting garbage as a symbol of purity.\Part multimedia extravaganza and part slasher film, Flicker uses inventive technology and high voltage live performance to create an innovative storytelling form that director Caden Manson calls \Real Time Film.\ Manson's New York company uses the language of media in a unique narrative form, pushing the formal boundaries of theater and film to create culturally transgressive and challenging new works.

Flicker merges live video projection and split-second choreography, in which two movies collide into each other to tell a dark tale, exploring the need to comprehend the \irreality\ of death and the everyday presence of violence.

“We are necrophiles; we work in a medium of the undead. We love to re-vivify the frozen corpse of performance every night for the fright and pleasure of an audience. A performance lives only in your memory; it haunts you, but it has a mythic and supernatural power. “Real-Time Film” is just such an experiment: like a Frankenstein’s monster it shows the method of its own making to the world. Do you watch the actors, the “movie” or the margins? The impulse to construct real-time film came from an impulse to exploit their power of the image against itself, to expose the weaknesses of a dominating vision. The form is not a celebration of technology but a means to question our role as visual consumers. Flicker explores an appetite for voyeuristic pleasure, where the characters try to reach through the flesh to attempt spiritual possession. But, we suspect, they are lost from the start.
