Playing with and against time. Loneliness in a monumental, sprawling fashion, whilst remaining minimalist in its essence and form. Snapshots of existence: how does frailty carry the possibility of becoming a force all by itself? Dying in public: is it mystical and mysterious or stripped-down intimacy displayed in public?
Playing with and against time. Loneliness in a monumental, sprawling fashion, whilst remaining minimalist in its essence and form. Snapshots of existence: how does frailty carry the possibility of becoming a force all by itself? Dying in public: is it mystical and mysterious or stripped-down intimacy displayed in public? Pippo Delbono and company don't ask and don't state anything. They just tell a tale. Stuttering, pondering over words, vowels and images, yet still possessing a certain accuracy. The magical journey to death forces the audience to ask questions. This Wild Darkness is a timeless, yet hi-tech Danse Macabre, evoking the wondrous power of (self)creation in the final moments, eliminating the down-to-earth quality of reality.
Pippo Delbono roamed the world and took it by storm, with his performance invited to places ranging from Montréal to Perm to every acclaimed theatre festival – this year, the director was awarded the special prize at the Wroclaw festival. The Contemporary Drama Festival is the first to present the company in Budapest and in the Central-European region as well.
The performance was inspired by New Yorker publicist Harold Brodkey's autobiographical work, that the director found in an empty bookshop in a small Burmese town by coincidence. The Italian volume seemed to be waiting for this mysterious event. "In that book, in that journey I discovered my own journey, my story. The thought of death was completely banned by then, especially in Western countries. Death always invokes fear, loss and pain, we rarely talk about it as a pure and deep knowledge that is afterall linked to life. - Pippo Delbono writes about the moving incident. This incident led to battling and defeating AIDS Delbono was diagnosed with in 1985. And in Delbono's case this all is not a marketing trick, it's not autosuggestion or an evangelizing phrase. It is the bare essence of his theatre: living the laws of existence on stage again and again, offering this opportunity to his audiences as well.
