Maria Dolores is total theatre, a mix of art forms, pure opera and absolute magic...
It might well be impossible to pinpoint a genre that describes Maria Dolores, a list is more likely to do so, as Traub’s most celebrated work is melodrama, fable, mystery play, Biblical tale and Christian ritual all in one. The spectator learns about an extraordinary triangular relationship between Geert, the sick Polly and actress Marie and observes the latter rehearsing a miracle play about the pregnant Mary and the jealous nun Dolores. Two unaccountably interconnected, often oddly parallel stories unfold, offering a multitude of possible interpretations.
The 34-year old Brussel born Wayn Traub describes his devotion to ritual theatre as a vocation in the religious sense of the term. He enthrallingly arranges the mediums of film, music, opera, dance and theatre to arrive at a remarkably intelligent and technically masterful "total" art of storytelling. His goal is not less daring than creating ritualistic theatre that can serve the personal and collective purification of his audience.
