This year marks the 21st edition of the Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, one of the country's longest-running and most visited film festivals. It features new creative documentaries to be discovered, as well as festival-winning international and Hungarian films, presenting diverse narratives from global issues to the most personal stories. At the 21st Verzió, from 6-13 November, more than 60 films will be screened in 4 competition categories and 8 thematic sections. The programme will give a voice to oppressed groups, minorities and people whose human rights are violated, and will invite viewers to engage in dialogue through a series of public events with the filmmakers and human rights defenders.
Verzió’s Opening Film, KIX is a 12-year odyssey following Sanyi's journey from a rowdy street kid in Budapest to a disillusioned young adult. Fueled by an unlikely friendship with filmmakers Dávid and Bálint, the film captures the evolution of Sanyi's life marked by family struggles, school issues, and the weight of surrogate fatherhood to his newborn sister. As Sanyi faces the challenges of adolescence, the filmmakers shift from active participants to observers in his life tumults; these culminate in a tragic turn of events forcing him to confront the responsibilities of adulthood.
The film’s world premiere was at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, currently the most prestigious documentary festival in Europe, and has been selected for numerous other international festivals from the U.S. to Taiwan. At the 20th ZagrebDox, the Hungarian-French-Croatian co-production was awarded the Big Stamp in the Regional Competition, the Small Stamp for the best film by a young author under the age of 35, and the FIPRESCI award from the world association of film critics. It received another FIPRESCI Award at the GoEast Festival in Wiesbaden, the Best Documentary Award at TIFF in Cluj and the Moral Approach Award at the MakeDox Film Festival in Skopje.
The film will be introduced by Andrea Pócsik.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers.
KIX will have its Hungarian cinema premiere on 21 November, distributed by Cirko Film.
Kix is as fascinating as any drama in the way that it finds the bigger picture in a single life.”
Quote from the film:
„The playground is a nerve-wracking place. There are a lot of assholes. We fight a brotherly fight but it’s nothing serious. Sometimes we beat each other up. We train ourselves for real life and we’re real tough.”
