We are increasingly forced to relate to pre-programmed computer programs. Who does not follow, does not count.
In Shadows in the Cloud the performers and audience are jointly dominated by a social operating system, called Terence. He promises us everything we ever dreamt of. We just have to follow his exact instructions. The fearless cybernauts of PIPS:lab will test this new operating system on you, so eventually we can all escape from daily reality through a galactic gateway.
Social Fiction is a trilogy wherein PIPS:lab gets recklessly stuck between theatre, cinema, painting, gaming and music. It is a glimpse of the future where all boundaries between realities are diffused. PIPS:lab brings you into an augmented state of confusion.
More than 15 years PIPS:lab makes interactive and humorous theatre based on self-designed technology, often with a large dose of unpredictability. Thus PIPS:lab contributes in their own way to the exploration of our digital Zeitgeist.
Social Fiction 2

After Social Fiction 1 in which the boundaries of online privacy were explored, PIPS:lab has now travelled further in virtual space with Social Fiction 2. Man is increasingly forced to relate to pre-programmed computer programs. Who does not follow, does not count.
In a time where artificial intelligence left it’s adolescence behind, PIPS:lab and it's audience will be completely guided by a ruthless self-learned computer system dominated by the algorithm; if this, than that. The audience witnesses the live recordings of a science fiction video in the form of an inscrutable choreography of two men and a camera, grimly looking for a galactic way out. The spectators hitch like virtual refugees in a spaceship and play an important role in this almost nostalgic trip in the future, as in any PIPS:lab show.
In Social Fiction 2 PIPS:lab uses a motion capture system in combination with the self-invented Potator tools. These make it possible to paint in 3D with peels of reality. PIPS:lab proves that they operate at the forefront of digital psychedelics and that the gateway to a new world is getting closer for everyone.

About PIPS:lab
PIPS:lab invades the theatre with new technology. With their home-brewed inventions and tailor-made software they create performances and installations of various kinds. Originating in the dark corners of the Amsterdam underground party scene, PIPS:lab has conquered the theatre, pop and art world in the 15 years of their existence. Using unstable media the multi-talented group members have truly become masters of the unexpected. The computer is their mixing tool, blending music, theatre, film and a healthy dose of comedy into absurd media theatre and ingenious installations. A PIPS:lab production never meets the expectations.
PIPS:lab is one of the pioneers in light writing, has an interactive lumasol installation in the collection of the ZKM in Karlsruhe, and is touring all over the world with its performances. Last year these Dutch artists brought their Diespace experience to TRAFÓ. In their recent work they investigate the limbo of mixed realities.
