Batik (J): TOUCH / SHOKU

2400 HUF / Student: 1900 HUF
General Season Pass is valid
Twin Pass is valid

Touch is an emotional roller coaster, an explosion of rage related to the frustration of Japanese women and the tension between internal (me) and the external (not me). The high energy unison movement is full of twitches and falls, punctuated by caryatid poses, while the score moves between classical and pop.

Kuroda says that “I’ve always been curious about the idea of inside and outside that’s separated by a layer of skin, the feeling of differentiating between myself who’s special, and the rest of the world. That’s why touching another person was a major event.”

BATIK is an all-female dance company founded in 2002, by choreographer, Ikuyo Kuroda. After winning the “National Committee Award” at Yokohama Platform of “Rencontre Choreographic Internationales de Seine Saint Denis” in 2002, they officially started as a professional dance company. Besides performing in Japan, the company has given overseas performances in various occasions so far including the Dance Umbrella Festival in U.K., Venice Biennale in Italy and Expo Zaragoza in Spain.

Ikuyo Kuroda started taking classical ballet lessons when she was six years old. While being a member of Tani Momoko Ballet Company, she went to London in 1997 to study contemporary dance at the Laban Centre. With BATIK she won the “Next Generation Choreographer Award” as well as the “Audience Award” at Toyota Choreography Award. Of late, she has expanded the area of activities─presenting solo works, choreographing for other companies and participating as a dancer in ASOBU choreographed and directed by Josef Nadj.
