\Dhrupad\ is the most ancient distiguishable style in classical Indian music, the earliest written example of which is over 2000 years old. Two forms were demonstrated from the beginning: as sung, and as played on the rudra-vina, an instrument seen in the oldest illustrations of India and known to have the most meditative sound of the istruments of India. The fourteenth century saw the dhrupad step out of temples and into royal courts, there becoming the standard leading instrument. It is to this era that the continued vein of Dagar music can be drawn back, a style in which two great twentieth-century representatives will be performing here this evening: Ustad Bahauudin Dagar and Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar! Pakhawaj-on Agle Sanjay will be the accompanist.
Before the concert, we invite you to a viewing of exerpts from Mani Kaul's film Dhrupad (in English with Hungarian subtitles) at 7 p.m.
