When Strindberg launched this piece it was a shocker and was promptly banned, later only experimental theatres played it for a long time. This one-act naturalistic tragedy tells about the struggle for existence through the passionate relationship of countess Julie and her servant. The strong feminine character is embodied in a contemporary story, her life lies for Bozsik Yvette to explore her own one, to bring forward her own experience. Bozsik Yvette’s adaptation is focused on the character reflecting the past and the present, showing the struggle between man and woman, raising the questions of emancipation and jealousy leading into tragedy.
