EMERGEANDSEE returns to Budapest for the 3rd time, and it’s even bigger and better! We are proudly presenting student short films by upcoming young talents of the future in moving images. You could not see such a show anywhere else, but from EMERGEANDSEE… it’s a must-see. The festival consists of four showreels, featuring two showreels each night. The filmmakers are from the UK, Germany, Hungary, Austria, France, Israel, Ireland, Finland and Canada, all very much mixed up and international. There is even more. We are inviting our audience to vote for the best film from each showreel. Come and be the judge! And you could enjoy a free drink after the show while you wait for the vote count.
History and the way of working
EMERGEANDSEE was started by Robert Laing and Kathrin Schöps in November 2000 in Camberwell College of Arts. Since then EMERGEANDSEE has grown enormously. We were students ourselves then, and made moving image work. Around that time the art colleges started to buy new equipment such as computer with editing equipment and DV cameras which enabled students to access making more moving image work. From there lot of experimental and new ideas in moving image field came out. We were those students ourselves, but realised that there was no outlet for us to show such work. Hence EMERGEANDSEE emerged so to present student moving image work to the public. After Show one at Camberwell College we moved straight to the Curzon Soho Cinema in the West End. There we held all other London EMERGEANDSEE shows, always selling out quickly. EMERGEANDSEE also grew internationally: thanks to the work of Hana Yamazaki, also a Camberwell Graphic Design student, we had two successful events in Budapest in spring/summer 2001 and expanded to Berlin in early 2002 where EMERGEANDSEE has been equally popular. What we noticed then having studied moving image and observing other students work, is that the best work was almost always based on a very good ideas. The technical quality did not matter too much, but the basic strong idea and knowing what tool to execute the idea seem to be the key to our selection in the early stage of EMERGEANDSEE. This principal and the criteria for selection still exist when we select films today. Our current selection has naturally changed, though, with the time. Our variety has expanded in a way that now we have more narrative traditional films as well as more animation, and also the diversity of the films became large: we receive films from not only UK, Germany and Hungary, but also from France, Canada, USA, Israel, Slovenia, and so on. Another important aim of EMERGEANDSEE is that we promote students. We want to connect the students and the potential employer or professionals who could help them to build their career after graduation. It is a mundane problem with art students that it is hard to get a job or build their career as artists by just finishing their degrees. After graduating Kathrin Schöps and Hana Yamazaki continued running EMERGEANDSEE and made it a company limited by guarantee with charitable aims. We continue running events in London, Berlin and Budapest and try to open up new opportunities to show films to a larger audience.
