Hotel Modern has contrived a new form of theatre: the live animation film. With The Great War a miniature film set is installed in the theatre. The audience is witness to the reconstruction of the landscapes of the Western Front on a miniature scale using sawdust, potting soil, rusty nails and parsley as trees. It rains from a plant moisturer; a gas jet bombards. A friendly field gradually mutates into a poisonous muddy open-wound. The images are filmed with digital and mini-cameras, and edited live through a mixer and projected larger than life. The result is staggeringly realistic. With De Grote Oorlog Hotel Modern has also earned a lot of international success. The production was performed in Belgium, Germany, England, France, Italy, Spain, Scotland and Slovenia. A film version of De Grote Oorlog was realised by ARTE, produced by AGAT-films and directed by Nanouk Leopold (director of Iles Flottantes, nominated for the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival 2001).
