In German with Hungarian subtitles.
The Christian girl, Eszter, disappears in a Hungarian village called Tiszaeszlár on the 1st of April 1882. Immediately, the Jewish community is under suspicion. The accusation is that Eszter has been sacrificed during the Jewish Passahfest. The mob runs wild, the Hungarian authorities declare a state of emergency, the aftermath is devastating and reaches far into the 21st century. The lawsuit has made history as the “Affair of Tiszaeszlár” it witnesses to the disastrous political developments of the time. Even today, the incidents around Eszter Solymosi are still of oppressing relevance. Anti-semitic cells manage to hold up the legends of Jews performing ritual sacrifices on children and each year Neonazis celebrate Eszter’s death.
Eszter Solymosi von Tiszaeszlár is the first work by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó in Hanover. Mundruczó became famous with his movie „Delta“, which won the critics’ award in Cannes 2008, and his impressive adaptation of Sorokins “Eis” and Shelleys “Frankenstein”, both works for the theatre stage.
