It’s hard to play a guessing game with Miet Warlop. Is it an object? No. Is it a creature? No. It’s a blend of the locations, details and roles of objects. Springville is a world in which the characters are in a state of constant change, whilst trying to co-exist alongside one another.
Mobilizing the lifeless objects of our everyday lives and giving them a new lease on life plays a central role in Miet Warlop’s work. She stubbornly searches for a new meaning and purpose for objects which have become so customary for us that we’ve practically exhausted their potential. Her inventions force us to create a new meaning, whilst refreshingly shaking us up from our customary habits. Props and costume designs take note: the performance’s emphasis is on its props!
“Brutally mixing up their [the objects] underlying, predetermined relationships in the same way a natural disaster can. You could see this in photos of areas that were visited by a violent hurricane. Destruction breathes new life into all objects. A new logic reigns over the environment. The relationships between objects are changed. Chairs that were standing in the garden are now standing on the roof; a tree emerges from the window instead of from the ground; or a car stands vertically against a wall.” /Miet Warlop on Springville/
