Young Jean Lee’s Theatre Company (USA) - The Shipment

1 hour 30 minutes, one part, in English with Hungarian subtitles.

Korean-American dramatist Young Jean Lee brings a battery of shamelessness and malicious wit to bear in her “black identity politics show” that plays with all imaginable stereotypes of African-American perception of self and others, citing clichés that range from minstrel shows and stand-up comedy acts to rapping and crack dealing. By turns sophisticated and bluntly direct, she hoodwinks the PC superego, outwits prejudices and twirls black/white images until we no longer know whether we should, can, must or may laugh.

The play’s title was inspired by a rap song about a drug shipment and at the same time refers to the historical trade in Black slaves. In the prologue, a stand-up comedian provokes the racist in each of us. Comical scenes tell the story of a Black youth who wants to become a star rapper and ends up a crack dealer - extreme stereotypes purveyed by White American media to depict Black America. The exceedingly funny final scene is a decadent cocktail party in which nothing is actually as it appears. Subversive and irreverent, Young Jean Lee exposes our unconscious filter of racial perception.

„Lee confirms herself as one of the best experimental playwrights in America. Her language manages to be both feverishly strange and rigorously intellectual, and she directs her charismatic, talented cast with economy and theatrical dash.”
