One of the most inspiring forms of 21st century theatre is documentary theatre, based on authentic sources and discussing themes lying on the street directly. After the – mostly German – documentary dramas of the sixties the London Royal Court launched its verbatim project-series in the nineties, but with Péter Halász’s news-theatre it appeared in Hungary, while Christoph Marthaler’s thematic shows also fall into this category (i.e. Spezialisten). But what the Rimini Protokoll introduced to European theatres, remains unique till this day.
PanoDrama’s March documentary theatre project, Word for Word opening in Trafó next March will thematize the racist Roma murders in Hungary. The creative producer asked Sebastian Brünger to hold a workshop on their method for its international team. Actors, dramaturgs and directors were asked to prepare from an anti-Roma incident each, which they will then develop during the one week workshop.
The final presentation gives us a peak into Rimini Protokoll’s method (with some projects presented in more detail), while summarizing the work of this intense week.
