Ektar plays contemporary, improvisational chamber music. They first appeared in front of a wider audience in the Autumn of 2002, at the Győr-FREE Music Festival. The group's compositions are inspired by the musical cultures of Africa, the Far East, and the Balkans; yet in the more strictly structured pieces, the influences of medieval music, European folk music and contemporary music can also be discovered. Ektar is an Indian word, which means one single string. In their expressiveness, melody variations and rhythmic sensitivity, the musicians seem to truly resonate with the vibrations of a single string. Ektar is also the name of a single-stringed Indian musical instrument which is heard in the concert, along with a range of other unique instruments such as the Gadulka (a Bulgarian string instrument), the Sarangi (Noth Indian string instrument), the Kalimba (African instrument), and a very special four-octave instrument called the Array-Mbira. These unique musical instruments are rarely heard alongside traditional jazz instruments on stage.
The Ektar Ensemble – bolstered to a sextet, with the participation of Szalai Péter as guest artist, offers a uniquely rich sound experience. Those who visit the Trafó on the 20th of March can witness this cavalcade of musical originality in person.
