"We are all travelers. We are all voyagers. Born into this world, embodied, we can only move forwards. But we are also all carriers. We are all bahok. We carry with us our genetic and cultural inheritance, our experiences, our dreams and aspirations.” (Akram Khan)
Work in progress:
After creating intimate duets with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (zero degrees) and Sylvie Guillem (Sacred Monsters), Akram Khan once again joins forces with long-time collaborator and multi award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney, who has created an original score for bahok. Originally in collaboration with China’s classical ballet flagship company, the National Ballet of China, bahok brings together 8 dancers from diverse cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds: Chinese, Korean, Indian, South-African and Spanish. As such they resemble a present day version of the tale of Babel, speaking different languages both with their bodies and tongues. In one of this globalized world’s transit zones they come together. They try to communicate, to exchange their stories, their memories of home.
Akram Khan, famous choreographer of his generation working in Britain today. He was born in London into a family of Bangladeshi origin in 1974. He studied with the great Kathak dancer and teacher Sri Pratap Pawar, later becoming his disciple. In August 2000, he launched his own company.

Its touring programmes have featured in leading dance festivals and venues all over the globe often playing to sell out houses and attracting rave reviews. The company has given over 300 performances in the past four years, during which Akram Khan has picked up a string of high profile awards and nominations. With his company his works together really well-known artists such as Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui or Juliette Binoche.
In April 2001 Akram Khan was made Choreographer in Residence at the South Bank Centre. In 2003 this tenure was changed to that of an Associate Artist, the first non musician to be afforded this status.
