Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten have worked together in their search for new dance forms since 1995.
For Greco and Scholten the curiosity towards the body and its inner motives serve as the starting point for creating dance. In their performances movement is seen as self-sufficient and capable of creating its own time and space. Dance is not used as a medium to convey a message or decorate theatrical space, instead it is seen as having an intelligence of its own, capable of communicating a wisdom of the body that needs no added explanations. Throughout the working process, all the elements of performance – stage design, sound, lighting – are there to support, contradict, provoke, compel and evolve with the body in a state of discovery.
Extra Dry Fra Cervello e Movimento is the title of a set of three dance performances; Bianco (1996), Rosso (1997) and Extra Dry (1999). The trilogy investigates the dyad brain (cervello) and movement (movimento); a mind that wishes to control and a body that is curious for new sensations. The motive is the interest towards the reactions that inner impulses impose on the body. How can the body surpass its limitations? How open can it be in its responses and what kind of transformations can it take on?
In Extra Dry another dancer enters Emio Greco | PC's universe for the first time; immersed in a field of sparkling gold scenery two dancers explore the boundaries of synchronicity. The perfectly controlling mind, subjecting the body to the will of the dancer is confronted by the body's resistance to obey. The two dancers breach invisible boundaries; moving from the explosive to the exploratory in the search for oneness.
Helmut Ploebst writes in “No wind, no word”: “Greco likes to abide in a space between events, and the reaction of the mind which tries to correlate these events with each other. The in between becomes the favourite working space and it is accompanied by the topic of duality: two different borders, two different aspects of reality, black and white or sacred and profane.”
Emio Greco | PC received the Philip Morris Arts Prize for the trilogy Fra Cervelllo e Movimento - Bianco, Rosso, Extra Dry \for the intelligent, thought-provoking and visually arresting way that Emio Greco | PC have given shape and movement to the theoretical ideas contained in the trilogy Fra cervello e movimento..
