Last autumn Krétakör Theatre presented this piece in Trafó directed by Kornél Mundruczó, based on Vladimir Sorokin’s novel Ice. Sorokin is one of the most controversial and exciting figures of the contemporary Russian literary scene, whose works have been translated into several languages and who is considered to be the ‘enfant terrible’ of Russian public life and contemporary Russian culture. Sorokin does not believe in the moral power of literature; his view is simply aesthetic and its boundaries are set by his demonic fantasy and perceptiveness. His plays and novels have inpired a new vision in their respective genres, which is precisely why the challenge of their production is so important.
