Born in 1970, having studied composition at the Hague Conservatory with Dederik Wagenaar, Gilius van Bergeijk and Louis Andriessen, the young Dutch composer Michel van der Aa is one of today’s most successful and sought-after artists. His mentors did have an impact on his expressive style but the hallmark of his work is still a kind of soft, poetic style devoid of stiffness and angularity. His piece entitled “Opera One” was first performed in January 2003, and it has since played in numerous cities across Europe. Chamber opera combines the human voice and electronic sound with video. This “musical multimedia drama” portrays the inner labyrinth of a confused woman unable to find herself.
