A Profitable Position was written in 1857 and Tolstoy himself greatly appreciated its depth and potency. The play examines the nature of corrupt bureaucrats, more precisely the way their special moral principles, defense mechanisms and self-absolution works. The play was banned at once, since the censure felt it parodied state clerks. It was only performed six years after its inception in Saint Petersburg. As to what remains of the original work, let that be our little secret, since the adaptation of the TÁP Theater reflects on the present.
