What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word Cinderella? A shoe? The castle? A costume? A broom? The venues of the story? The scenery, the set of the fairy tale?
Eszter Kalman, the young and talented theatremaker studied photography and theatre in education (TIE), drama pedagogy in Hungary. She moved to the UK and studied at University of Bristol’s Drama Department, where she was most interested in set design and contemporary perfomance art during her studies. After moving back to Hungary, she worked as an assistant director and production assistant to several performances and productions in both Hungarian and English language. Currently she works as a freelance designer and director in alternative/underground productions.
In her new piece she is creating a special Cinderella-performance, without actors. It attempts to tell a story through its own audiovisual system of symbols. It conducts experiments and makes attempts. An experiment of theatrical devices that examines the human being, as a viewer – primarily as a recipient.
