The love child of breakdance and classical ballet.
Through the RUBBERBAND method, a unique style of movement is brought to full fruition in the bodies of six exceptional performers whose backgrounds range from classical, contemporary, and urban dance to circus arts. The method introduces dancers to a movement hybrid influenced by urban and contemporary dance vocabularies, while emphasizing interpretation, decision-making, the use of rhythmic variations, and partnering. After their memorable Loan Sharking (2011) we have a chance to see the new work of the Canadian dance collective. Situations of dependence, rejection, empathy, and acceptance are woven together in a complex display of athleticism and precision.
From the hip-hop clubs of his native Los Angeles to a performance career with internationally-acclaimed postmodern and ballet dance companies, by age 26, Victor Quijada, the choreographer, was recognized as a magnetic and expansive dancer. He had gained a rare perspective on a large spectrum of dance, possessing knowledge and experience that spanned from the street corner to the concert hall. Over the past ten years the remarkable duo has brilliantly developed the distinctive signature that is the hallmark of RUBBERBANDance Group.
