Electrify vol. 16 // Grouper (US), ssaliva (BE), Carla Under Water(HU)

2400 HUF | in advanced booking: 1900 HUF (the first 100 tickets)
The main theme of Electrify’s 16th night is dream-like atmospheres, as the modern-day soul-crushing ballads of Grouper meet the Belgian ssaliva’s romantic hyperambient chamber music and Carla Under Water’s powerful improvisations.

Portland-based Liz Harris’s project, Grouper evokes unattainable celestial worlds, the all-consuming love that everyone desires to feel and nature’s almighty powers all at the same time. Her songs, glorious fruits of a marriage between dream-pop and ambient, paint impressionistic landscapes filled with hope, humility and soul-crushing beauty by Grouper’s mysterious, fragile vocals, guitar, piano and an vast amount of effects. Her debut album was released in 2005 and, up until now, eight albums have since followed, exploring uncharted pocket after uncharted pocket within her universe. During her career she has worked with Xiu Xiu and The Bug, and toured extensively with Animal Collective; it also says a lot about her music’s universal nature that artists as diverse as Nils Frahm, Tropic of Cancer, Gaslamp Killer, Trentemøller, The Haxan Cloak and Friendly Fires have all covered her songs. Electrify will mark Grouper’s first appearance in Hungary, and as her music is always the most entrancing in a concert context, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Francois Boulanger, the Belgian behind ssaliva, has journeyed from IDM through experimental hip-hop, house and vaporwave to arrive at today’s ambient sound. Although he has experimented with many forms, he is talented enough to be able, with only a small set of tools, to effortlessly create accessible and at the same time unique, warm meditative atmospheres in every genre that he sets foot in. This was true when Stones Throw sublabel Leaving Records started releasing his airy, nostalgic, pop-infused records, and it is still true today, even though his records are far more abstract. His almost utopian melodies still hold center stage, but an impressive dynamic and spatial range, comparable to Arca, has transformed these instruments into sentient beings with impassioned insrumentation and a unique sonic language. At Electrify he will take his next steps forward, presenting his brand new audio-visual show entitled Greenery.

Currently living in Los Angeles, Máté Tulipán is behind Carla Under Water’s powerful improvisations. Using saxophone, his voice, samples, drums, synths and all sorts of various noises, he channels all his energies to engage with the greatest ghosts this world has ever seen. Carla Under Water’s songs are wonderful snapshots of these spiritual encounters. His official debut solo release came out in 2016, and he has also worked together with 12z and Farbwechsel founder S Olbricht, with whom he has released a number of songs.
