In 2003, Philippe Quesne created Vivarium Studio to develop and set up his own projects. The first piece, titled La Démangeaison des Ailes (The Itching of the Wings), featured actors, plasticians, musicians and a dog. Since this first experience, and for five years now, the story of Vivarium Studio still goes on, with the same people, and sometimes inviting new guests to join projects both inFrance and other countries.
Since the beginning, Philippe Quesne tries to connect a subject with an appropriate narrative mode: the desire of flight and the fall (La Démangeaison des Ailes, 2003), the uncertainty facing the risks of the future (Des Expériences, 2004-2005), the environmental threats and our incapacity to remedy it (D’après Nature, 2006). He approaches different topics, often with a soft irony. He works on various types of texts (interviews, articles, poems, songs, lists of words) combined with other elements of theatre (like bodies, sound, light, videos, movements).
The scenic writing is based on a strong connection between space, set, and bodies. The sets often become working studios or "Vivarium spaces" that present a human microcosm. The performances are inspired by diverse references taken from literature, human sciences, visual arts, music, cinema, comics, etc.
Philippe Quesne also uses materials borrowed from "reality:" (interviews, testimonies...) but always maintains the ambiguity between true/false, real/artificial, illusion/truth.
For five years, Philippe Quesne has developed his project with the same people. He creates a répertoire of performances that tour in France and internationally. He has created site-specific projects in art galleries, urban spaces, parks and garden, forests, etc. The performances of Vivarium Studio have been presented in theaters and festivals in such different countries as USA (P.S.122 New York, TBA:06 Portland), Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Leetonia, Iceland, Finland, Austria, Slovenia, etc.
From 2004 to 2007, Vivarium Studio had a residence in Le Forum du Blanc-Mesnil (Paris). This collaboration allowed the company to develop his projects but also to imagine and develop new ways of meeting with people, settling his action in a real durability. During the residence, Philippe Quesne also created specific forms (movies, urban performances, publishing, etc.), directly filled out by the exchanges with the inhabitants and the immediate urban context. Vivarium Studio had another 3 years residence, in La Ménagerie de Verre (Paris), which is a more experimental stage. There, Philippe Quesne leaded research workshops, rehearsal and organized different events by inviting other artists (musicians, plasticians, etc.).
Big Bang is Philippe Quesne / Vivarium Studio’s most recent production. We recognize their laboratory theatre which does one’s utmost to modify the conventions of the genre and creates a world with blurred outlines, swinging between real and artificial, dream and matter. Big Bang has the shape of a sequence of images, in which a small group of human beings unfolds its own theory of evolution, marking the ruptures, inventions, extinctions as well as the strangest transformations. Big Bang offers the experience of a scenic production being made, putting-up and dismantling the wheels of illusion born of the nice theatrical image. A plastic, poetic and odd epic, from plankton to post-modernism.
