HOW TO? educational program series for young dance artists vol.III: ABROAD

Jenna Jalonen young dancer, choreographer was the 3rd guest of HOW TO? educational program series, moderated by Levente Lukács. Jenna comes from Finland but got her classical ballet degree in the Hungarian Dance Academy, since then she has cooperated with the following artists/companies: Éva Duda, Central European Dance Theater, Kubilai Khan Investigations, Kwaad bloed/Ugo Dehaes, fABULEUS, Thierry de Mey, Theater Bremen, Máté Mészáros, Notch Company/Oriane, HODWORKS etc. She is co-founder of the contemporary dance & performance art collective called Collective Dope while she also researches, practises and teacher her moving method named triplewave. All these success and names mentioned above leaves us no doubt the she is a perfect guest for our 3rd topic, ABROAD. Main ’to do’s’ of living and working abroad, possibilities and how to-s we got richer with;

1. IF ABROAD

- PLANNING: WHERE, WHY, WHEN, HOW, CONTACTS
- GOAL: school/company/project/starting from zero
- you should start your research already from home: video links to performances, workshops, getting in contact with dancers working abroad, international platforms here in (IDW, dunaPart, Trafó, Workshop Foundation, SÍN Arts and Culture Center etc.)
- try to find still at home your main interest
- find the country you like
- learn languages!
- you can try yourself out with summer workshops (lot of teachers together, it is cheaper then to go to each teacher’s class one by one)

2. RESIDENCY

- residency: working possibility made happen mainly by organisations, it gives possibility to rehearse, research, sometimes perform the details always depending on the type of residency
- always read the description carefully!
- examine your topic if it is a match with the residency, if the timing suits you, if you are satisfied with the terms
- if you find a city you would love to have a residency in, ask around, write the theatres, look for artists living there

3. NETWORKING

- building connections
- keep in mind that it counts who do you know and who knows you
- it could help with getting information, understanding structures, even getting a job

How can you network?
- don’t sit at home, attend what you can
- positive attitude
- remembering names
- don’t try to sell your product, but try to connect and find mutual points
- exchange call-cards
- if it happened to be a longer conversation, try to make notes after for yourself from the important information
- connecting on social media 

4. CHILL

- be yourself, it is not a meat market, if you are talking with someone who had already seen your work ask for feedback (it can help you improve), realize that possibly not everyone will like your work (and so what? It is totally okay), you should continue the communication/cooperation with the people who do.
Dare, ask, question, research, structure, accept, get ready, watch performances, make mistakes, learn from them, and have a positive attitude; these could be the key words for the ones with interest towards pursuing carrier abroad. We will meet one more time in this season, on the 13th of May at 6pm, before the performance of Beatrix Simkó and Jenna Jalonen, „Long time no see!”. We will focus on the administrative and financial background of dance profession: tax, notax, invoice, contract, business, organisation helping artists, and of course; your questions. Anikó Rácz from SÍN Arts and Culture Center is going to help us find some answers, come let’s get smarter together!
