Gnawa is an ancient, sacral, trance-like genre of music, the “oldest, 4000 year-old rock ’n’ roll in the world”, as described by William Borroughs. Mahmoud Gania is currently the most famous maâllem (master) in the world.

Countless films and recordings have been done with this great Maâllem (Master) who is one of the foremost in the Moroccan Gnawa music scene today – he has released a number of CDs, and was recorded by Bill Laswell and Oz Fritz and featured by American saxophone player Pharoah Sanders and gave concerts with the likes of Peter Brötzmann and Carlos Santana. It’s safe to say that there has never been such high-quality Gnawa music in Hungary before.
