N. Ravikiran is the most famous composer of Indian Carnatic music. He learned under the guidance of his father, Narasimhan, and debuted as a vocalist in 1972. He was introduced in the Madras Music Academy, Krishna Ghana Sabha, where he stunned the music world with his ability to identify and render about 325 ragas (melodic scales) and 175 talas (rhythmic cycles). He has been called the "Indian Mozart". Considered a virtuoso chitravina player, he has been described as "probably the greatest slide instrumentalist in the world today" by Radio Australia. Dr. Trichy Sankaran is a world-renowned percussion virtuoso, Indian music scholar and composer. In his 55 years of concert experience in Carnatic music, he has accompanied all the stalwarts in the field, including Sri Ariyakkudi, Chembai, Semmangudi, GNB, Alathoor Brothers, Madurai Mani Iyer, among others.
"With mikes all around him and his hands full of biscuits, all the time playing, the child gave out correct answers", stated The Music Academy's journal in 1969, of two-year-old prodigy Ravikiran's demonstration. Born in 1967, Ravikiran stunned the music world with his ability to identify and render about 325 ragas (melodic scales) and 175 talas (rhythmic cycles). He has been called the "Indian Mozart". Today N. Ravikiran is considered the most famous composer of Indian Carnatic music and a virtuoso chitravina player. He has also been described as "probably the greatest slide instrumentalist in the world today" by Radio Australia. The musician has played the slide Hawaiian guitar, and is an accomplished vocalist. He currently resides in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
Ravikiran is the author of several widely read books, and he has introduced a number of ragas also. Ravikiran has even worked with orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra.
The instrument he plays, chitravina is one of the most exquisite of Indian musical instruments. Also referred to as the gotuvadyam, it is a 21-stringed, fretless lute, quite similar in its playing technique to the vichitravina of North India. With a history going back to nearly 2000 years, it is one of the oldest instruments in the world, and the forerunner of the fretted (Saraswati) veena.

In his 55 years of concert experience in Carnatic music, he has accompanied all the stalwarts in the field including Sri Ariyakkudi, Chembai, Semmangudi, GNB, Alathoor Brothers, Madurai Mani Iyer, and others. In addition to his usual traditional settings, he has performed with gamelan, jazz, electronic, African music ensembles, and World Drums.
