Máté Mészáros: United Space of Ambivalence

Never-ending game, accurate parody of art and oneself, or fake documentary insight into the creative processes of art making?

It is hard to work out where the stage, on which Patrik Kelemen, Dávid Mikó, Gáspár Téri, Tamás Bakó and Máté Mészáros (the choreographer – although in reality there are several candidates for this role) move with such energy, ends and in which direction it faces. The ambivalence suggested by the work’s title does not reflect the performance itself: it is the audience that is left confused, as they are playful and ironically confronted with their own ideas on art, aesthetics, and genre boundaries, as well as their notions of stereotypes and the irritating realization that something, due to its contradictory nature, does not entirely fit into established and defined categories and systems.

The performance space, rather than being an empty environment, becomes an ever-changing live installation in which the dancers can either simply exist, or instead interact with each other. Roles constantly change, with the relationship between directed and freely-created movement remaining fluid and open: what seems clear one minute is turned upside down the next.

In this new creation by Máté Mészáros, the creators approach the body as a dynamic object: it does not feel nor seek, but instead moves and executes.
