Felabration Budapest is the second event in Hungary dedicated to celebrate the life and music of Nigerian musician, composer and human rights activist Fela Kuti. Among Fela’s original Egypt 80 band member, keyboard player and singer Dele Sosimi and Budapest’s brand new all-star afrobeat ensemble, The Mabon Dawud Republic, we have some of the city’s finest singers and rappers joining forces on stage: Sena Dagadu, Saïd Tichiti, Akkezdet Phiai and Slow Village.

A crucial artist of afrobeat, Fela passed away 20 years ago, in 1997. It was during a ten-month tour in the United States that he came to know the organizations that fought for civil rights. Upon returning home, his music and way of life became radicalized. His lyrics would speak out against social injustice, he and his band Africa 70 would give five concerts a week, and the events would include political speeches and religious ceremonies. He lived in a commune with his closest followers and his family, which they symbolically declared to be an independent republic, and which gave work to hundreds of people. Fela was routinely imprisoned and beaten after the release of an anti-governmental song; he was arrested over two hundred times.

Felabration is a music festival founded in 1998. The original event in Lagos is a one-week happening, with countless guest performers, concerts and other events. For many years, independent, one-day Felabration concerts have been held in a growing number of cities around the world (London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo).
